Analytik Jena Wins Large Chinese Order
Jena, March 11, 2010 - Analytik Jena AG, one of the leading providers of analytical and bioanalytical instruments for industrial and research applications, has won a large order from China in the field of life science. The company is supplying the Asian region with biotechnology systems manufactured by Biometra GmbH, a subsidiary based in Göttingen, Germany. Most of the revenues from the large order, valued at more than EUR 0.5 m, will be booked in the third quarter of the 2009/2010 fiscal year.
"China's rising standard of living makes it one of the strongest growing markets in the world and an attractive export target for the entire life science industry," said Klaus Berka, CEO of Analytik Jena AG. "Biometra is already generating 10 percent of its revenues through its long-standing sales partner in China. This is a remarkable achievement in light of the highly competitive Chinese market.
The large-scale order encompasses the delivery of several hundred Thermocyclers, a DNA amplification platform designed especially for biomedical and pharmaceutical research applications. Biometra GmbH, 100 percent acquired by Analytik Jena in May 2009 and integrated into the Life Science business unit, is one of the pioneers in the field of DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technologies.
"In January 2010, we created and integrated our own sales structures for the life science market in China into our existing, extremely successful organization in Peking. We expect this move to expand the immense potential of our broad product portfolio in this segment. Overall, revenue growth has been excellent in the life science business thanks to our strategy and positioning as a complete provider," added Berka.
The company's Life Science business unit registered revenue growth of 488.9 percent in the first three months of the 2009/2010 fiscal year, spurred in particular by Biometra GmbH.

Analytik Jena's French sales partner Serlabo Technologies has opened its first demonstration lab and customer training center in Paris.
The premises were officially opened for operation on January 28, 2010 in a ceremony which was attended by important French business partners, including the Beun de Ronde Group and several major suppliers.
"Our new demonstration lab located in the French capital will enable us to reach our customers in this key market much more quickly and directly", said Dr. René Nowka, Regional Manager for Western Europe (Business Unit Analytical Instrumentation) at Analytik Jena AG. "With our French sales partner Serlabo Technologies we are ideally positioned for the future, enabling us to further expand our sales activities in the whole of France and to offer our customers the best possible service".

In the first three months of fiscal year 2009/2010 Analytik Jena achieved a turnover of €5.7 million in Europe (not including Germany), which corresponds to a growth in turnover of 19.1%. In November 2009 Analytik Jena was able to gain an important new customer in France, the Université de Franche-Comté in Besançon. Through Serlabo Technologies the 100th SPECORD® spectrophotometer was sold to the French university for use in biotechnology research.
Analytik Jena's products, which range from the PHOTOCHEM®, via the SPECORD® 205/S600, through to the multi EA® 5000, are predominantly represented in the demonstration and training areas in the lab, which is equipped with devices from different suppliers.
Analytik Jena in the First Quarter with a Stable Business Development
- Sales increase is 25.7 % despite economic crisis
- Operating result slightly down compared to previous year`s record numbers
- Strong growth in Life Science
Jena/Germany, February 11, 2010 — With sales of EUR 21.6 m, Analytik Jena AG (Frankfurt DE0005213508, Prime Standard: AJA) has made a solid start to the new financial year, maintaining its position well despite an ongoing difficult market environment. This was the statement made by the Thuringia-based company today during the presentation of its three-months figures.
Sales and Earnings
In the first quarter of the 2009/2010 financial year, Analytik Jena achieved consolidated revenue of EUR 21.6 m and, including the acquired subsidiaries Cybio and Biometra, accordingly recorded sales growth of 25.7 %. In operating results Analytik Jena recorded a slight fall. With an EBIT margin of 9.0 %, earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) amounted to EUR 1.9 m, down 14.5 % year on year. Earnings per share were EUR 0.21.
"Altogether the Company recorded stable business development. In view of the first three months of the 2009/2010 financial year as expected Analytik Jena could considerably grow in the business unit Life Science", said Klaus Berka, CEO of Analytik Jena AG. "The operating results are below the record quarter of the previous year, but considering the overall economic conditions and some special effects they are a good starting position to continue our growth in the current financial year", Berka added.
Alongside the positive influence of major projects in the previous year, the significantly weaker dollar together with a negative balance of financial expenses to financial income, special amortization from the acquisitions and the unexpectedly large drop in Optics sales would also need to be taken into account when comparing the quarters year on year.
Above all in the important growth field of Life Science the Company made important progress in setting the course in the first quarter. This is also reflected in the results of this segment. Altogether the Group achieved sales in this segment of EUR 8.1 m, up by 488.9 % year on year. Both CyBio AG and Biometra GmbH contributed significantly to the sales of this business unit. The business unit also increased its sales organically by 30.8 %. For the first time Analytik Jena made a positive operating result in this business unit of EUR 0.5 m EUR compared to EUR -0,2 m in the same period of the previous year.
The business unit Analytical Instrumentation noted a slight sales decrease. In view of the investment restraint due to the economic situation and the fact that several major orders in the same period of the previous year had to be compensated, the sales fell slightly by 9.1 % and came to EUR 12.4 m. The operating results (EBIT) were accordingly down 33.4 % from EUR 1.9 m to EUR 1.3 m.
The segment Optics achieved sales in the first three months of the financial year of EUR 1.1 m and was therefore 50.6 % down on the previous year. The increasing competitive pressure in the consumer segment throughout the entire sector was felt most sharply in this business unit. The operating result was EUR 0.2 m related to EUR 0.6 m in the same period of the previous year.
Balance Sheet and Cash Flow
The Group’s total assets remained virtually unchanged as of December 31, 2009, at EUR at EUR 75.2 m compared to EUR 75.5 m as of September 30, 2009. Equity increased to EUR 39.7 m (September 30, 2009: EUR 38.4 m). This corresponds to an equity ratio of 52.9 %. The level of cash and cash equivalents rose to EUR 11.4 m as at the end of the reporting period related to EUR 10.4 m as of September 30, 2009.
Outlook
As before, Analytik Jena expects to continue its positive development in the current financial year. Stable incoming orders in the key business unit Analytical Instrumentation, that are slightly above average of the previous financial year, make us confident to close the current sales gap in this segment by the end of the financial year or even to exceed the revenue of the previous financial year. Especially the "analytica" in March 2010 in Munich is certain to act as a indicator for the further development in the second half of the year. A variety of new products are supposed to further expand the business.
"For the current second quarter we expect a slight further sales growth in the business unit Life Science and for the first time again in Optics as well. In Analytical Instrumentation we will still be slightly down year on year. This will also be reflected in the operating results with a comparatively moderate increase. The revival of the US dollar over the past few weeks serves to support our business model", Berka emphasizes.

Analytik Jena Continues Growth in Financial Year 08/09 Despite Economic Crisis
- Notable sales growth in instrument business
- Significant increase of operating profit (EBIT) and cashflow
- Earnings per share with EUR 0.51 at previous year's level
Jena/Germany, December 17, 2009 — With the best result since foundation of the Company, Analytik Jena AG (Frankfurt DE0005213508, Prime Standard: AJA) successfully completed financial year 2008/2009 as of September 30, 2009.
The provider of analytical, bioanalytical, and optical systems generated revenue in instrument business of EUR 71,132 thousand (previous year: EUR 53,079 thousand). Taking into account the acquired subsidiaries CyBio AG and Biometra GmbH this means an increase of 34.0%. The organic revenue growth corresponds to the Company put on 10.3%.
"The strategic direction of Analytik Jena with the focus on the instrument business, sensible company acquisitions, and the essential reinforcement of sales structures, is effective. Despite an extremely difficult economic environment, we were able to continue to generate strong growth in terms of revenue and EBIT. We see this as testimony to the strength of our business model", said Klaus Berka, CEO of Analytik Jena AG.
Particularly in its core analytical solutions and bio solutions business units, the Company significantly boosted its revenue. With revenue of EUR 46,635 thousand (previous year: EUR 40,225 thousand), the analytical solutions business unit was able to increase the previous year's record revenue again by a significant 15.9%. In particular, new innovative products in the premium-price segment and revenue increase in the Chinese market were able to compensate somewhat for overall global investment restraint.
The bio solutions business unit recorded revenue of EUR 17,876 thousand (previous year: EUR 4,317 thousand). This quadrupling of revenue was for the most part attributable to the integration of the CyBio AG and Biometra GmbH subsidiaries. However, the business unit also achieved a strong organic growth of 22.1%.
Consumer restraint linked to the macroeconomic environment affected in particular the optical solutions business unit, which, given its consumer-oriented target groups, expectedly was unable to maintain its 12-year long upward trajectory. With a slight increase in margin, revenue in the optical solutions business unit in the past financial year totaled EUR 6,621 thousand (previous year: EUR 8,537 thousand), reflecting a decline of 22.4%.
The Group has an export ratio of 67.0% (previous year: 73.0%) and the Asia region continues to expand its position as the largest foreign sales market. Goods amounting to EUR 23,276 thousand were exported to this region (previous year: EUR 15,770 thousand). Taking into account the acquired subsidiaries CyBio AG and Biometra GmbH, the Group's revenue within Germany increased by 27.4% to EUR 23,451 thousand (previous year: EUR 18,403 thousand).
Analytik Jena achieved solid results again in the past financial year. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) increased by 36.4% to EUR 9,400 thousand (previous year: EUR 6,893 thousand). The operating result (EBIT) rose by about 34.1% to EUR 6,316 thousand (previous year: EUR 4,709 thousand), which corresponds to an EBIT margin of 8.9% compared with 8.9%, taking only the continued instrument business unit into account. Earnings before tax (EBT) advanced by 58.0% from EUR 2,857 thousand in the previous year to EUR 4,513 thousand in the period under review. The net profit for the year increased at a much lower 12.8% to EUR 2,706 thousand (previous year: EUR 2,399 thousand). This result was particularly encumbered by very high tax expenses of EUR 1,807 thousand compared to the previous year (EUR 458 thousand), which corresponds to a tax rate of 40.0% (previous year: 16.0%). This result was mainly caused by the fact, that high profits were diminished by losses at our subsidiary AJ Japan, for which no deferred tax assets could be recognized as of the balance sheet date. Furthermore, the net profit for the year was negatively affected by the loss associated with the investment in AJZ Engineering of EUR -929 thousand (previous year: EUR -451 thousand). Due to these effects both basic and diluted earnings per share were unchanged compared to the previous year at EUR 0.51 per share.
Analytik Jena's total assets as of the balance sheet date on September 30, 2009 increased from EUR 57,418 thousand to EUR 75,465 thousand as a result of the acquisitions completed in the past financial year. Cash flow from operating activities increased by EUR 6.193 thousand to EUR 4,531 thousand (previous year: EUR -1,662 thousand).
As of September 30, 2009, the Group had a total of 773 employees, including 54 interns (previous year: 536 employees, including 48 interns).
"The Group's strategic focus in the current financial year and beyond will be on the integration of the new subsidiaries CyBio AG and Biometra GmbH into the bio solutions business unit and the combined approach towards the major growth area of life science. The goal is to expand international sales and distribution network further and to leverage fully the experience and structures of analytical solutions for other business units", Berka added.
Analytik Jena anticipates that it will maintain overall growth in the current financial year.

The majority shareholder Analytik Jena AG exercised 1,178,126 subscription rights. 64,593 subscription rights were exercised by other shareholders. The 557,281 shares not subscribed to by the old shareholders were transferred to Analytik Jena AG in the course of a private placement after the end of the subscription period.

Analytik Jena Obtains Full Approval for H1N1 Test
Jena, December 4, 2009 — Analytik Jena AG`s molecular-genetic rapid test for direct identification of the H1N1 pathogen has been approved with immediate effect for in-vitro diagnostics. The company launched this test in October, initially for research purposes. Since then, several thousand clinical tests have been successfully performed in order to detect this influenza virus under laboratory conditions.
"This approval means that Analytik Jena can now launch two further important tests onto the market for molecular diagnostics and medical use" commented Klaus Berka, Chairman of the Executive Board of Analytik Jena AG. "Our strategy of combining hardware with molecular-diagnostic applications was first successfully implemented across the group following the integration of the new subsidiaries."
The RapidStripe H1N1 Assay KF combines isolation of viral nucleic acids on the KingFisher Flex purification machine with amplification and detection. Using the RapidStripe H1N1 Detection Assay, the user can carry out amplification and detection regardless of the nucleic acid isolation. Both test systems were developed for both Analytik Jena’s rapid cycler as well as the standard cycler produced by Göttingen-based Biometra GmbH, which was 100% acquired in May. Depending on the automated system used, the test provides a result within 2 to 4 hours.
The innovative procedure forming the basis of the two tests, that was developed within the Group and is known as the Rapid-Amplification-Hybridization (RAH) technology, combines amplification of the target nucleic acids with a specific hybridization reaction. The reactions take place in a reaction vessel, the simple visual detection or identification takes place on a test stripe.
"Analytik Jena is well and truly on the road to becoming a systems provider for molecular diagnostics", stated Berka. "We will put great effort in future into developing new products in the area of pathogenic detection — for example in the field of food safety or the investigation of ticks. In the mid-term, we will also increasingly focus on molecular tumor diagnostics in which we develop products for the detection of point mutations in ocogenes as the basis of therapeutic decision-making."
